The government of Haiti declared a 72-hour state of emergency on Sunday after armed gangs stormed a major Port-au-Prince prison, leading to the killing of at least 12 people and the escape of about 4,000 inmates.
Gang leaders said they want to force the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who is currently abroad.
The groups aiming to oust him control about 80% of Port-au-Prince.
Violent gang wars have killed thousands in the country since 2020.

Haiti's government has declared a state of emergency as violence escalates. Armed gangs demanding the prime minister's resignation have attacked two prisons, allowing thousands of inmates to escape, and leaving dozens dead and wounded.
Violence has reached unprecedented levels since the assassination of president Jovenel Moise at his home in 2021. It's estimated that gangs now control as much as 80 percent of the capital Port-au-Prince. Prime minister Ariel Henry travelled out of the country last week to try and drum up support for a multinational peace mission to bring the gang violence under control.

Armed groups have stormed Haiti’s largest prison, defying police forces who have called for help after days of gunfire in parts of the capital as a major gang leader seeks to topple Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
Two of the Caribbean country’s main police unions called for assistance on Saturday to stop inmates, many considered to be high-profile criminals, from fleeing the National Penitentiary in Port-Au-Prince.

Haiti gang violence: Port-au-Prince residents flee heavy gunfire
There's been a surge in violence in Haiti's capital, with a top gang leader threatening to prevent Prime Minister Ariel Henry from returning to the country.
Henry is in Kenya, which had agreed to send police officers to Haiti as part of a UN-approved mission.
There was heavy gunfire and traffic disruptions in some areas of the capital Port-au-Prince on Friday.

Haiti declares curfew after thousands of inmates escape jail
Haiti has declared a three-day state of emergency and a night-time curfew after armed gangs stormed the country’s two biggest jails, allowing more than 3,000 dangerous criminals, including murderers and kidnappers, to escape back on to the streets of the poor and violence-racked Caribbean nation.
